Allianz Commercial has announced a strategic round of senior leadership changes, all effective from August 1, 2025, with the appointment of Elke Vagenende. The goal? To strengthen global client relationships, enhance broker engagement, and realign regional operations in response to evolving market dynamics, particularly in Benelux and the Nordics.
Elke Vagenende to Lead Global Client Management
Elke Vagenende, currently the regional managing director for Benelux and the Nordics, has been appointed chief client officer. In her new role, she will spearhead Allianz Commercial’s global client management activities. Notably, she will continue her regional responsibilities until September 1, ensuring a smooth leadership transition.
Vagenende, a Belgian national, has held her current post since 2023. Her career spans key positions in underwriting, broking, and risk management. Before rejoining Allianz, she led multinational risk teams at BP and Siemens, and previously worked with Allianz in the UK.
“Elke Vagenende brings a wealth of international experience and strategic insight. Her leadership will play a crucial role in our global client engagement efforts,” the company noted in its announcement.

Tom Leonard to Head Global Broker Management
In another key move, Tom Leonard has been appointed global head of broker management. He is currently serving as Global Broker Account Director and has been with Allianz UK since 2007.
Leonard will manage global, international, and key regional broker relationships. With a strong background in underwriting, trading, and operations, he brings deep expertise to the role. Both Leonard and Vagenende will be based in London. They will report to Jeremy Sharpe, who leads the company’s global distribution team.
Martin Zschech Sharpens Focus on Private Equity
While these leadership changes take place, Martin Zschech, global head of industry solutions and client management, will continue overseeing global client initiatives. However, his responsibilities will now focus more sharply on the private equity sector. This is an area Allianz is targeting for expansion.
Broader Changes Follow 2024 Leadership Realignment
These appointments come in the wake of a wider executive reshuffle at Allianz Commercial in late 2024. At that time, Shanil Williams was named chief regions officer for the Americas, while Vanessa Maxwell became chief underwriting officer. Maxwell’s role also expanded to include global cyber insurance oversight, a growing priority for Allianz and its clients.

The Nordics Become a Standalone Region
In a significant regional development, Allianz Commercial will now recognize the Nordics as an independent business region. Effective August 1, Margaretha Mo will become the regional managing director for the newly established area. She will be overseeing operations in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
Mo has led the Nordics as country managing director since 2024. A Swedish national, she brings 30 years of industry experience. In her previous capacity, she worked in executive roles across both insurers and brokerages in the region.
Leadership Transitions in Benelux
As Vagenende transitions to her global role, Jonathan Poole will take over her Benelux responsibilities. Poole joins Allianz from Chubb, where he most recently served as head of the mid-market division for the UK and Ireland.
Based in Belgium, Poole brings over 30 years of experience in the European corporate insurance market. This will make him a strong fit for this critical regional leadership role.
