Aviva Canada has announced a major leadership transition. Nav Dhillon, the company’s current Chief Financial Officer, has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer of Aviva Canada following the departure of Tracy Garrad, who is returning to the UK for personal reasons.

Leadership Change at a Pivotal Time

This transition comes during a critical period for Aviva Canada, as the company continues to navigate complex market conditions. Amanda Blanc, Group CEO of Aviva PLC, acknowledged Garrad’s impactful tenure.

“I want to thank Tracy for her service through what has been an important couple of years for our Canadian business, with some significant achievements, and we wish her well for the future,” Blanc said.

During her two-year leadership, Garrad helped oversee strategic initiatives that strengthened Aviva’s Canadian operations.

Nav Dhillon Steps In as Interim CEO of Aviva Canada

Nav Dhillon, who joined Aviva Canada in 2022 as Chief Financial Officer, now takes over as interim CEO. The appointment is subject to regulatory approval, and the company has already initiated a search for a permanent CEO, considering both internal and external candidates.

Dhillon brings extensive financial and operational experience within the Canadian insurance landscape. His interim leadership is expected to provide stability and continuity during this important transition.

Blanc expressed confidence in Dhillon’s capabilities, stating:

“Nav has considerable experience of the Canadian insurance market and Aviva, and we are pleased he is taking on the CEO role whilst we conduct an internal and external search for a successor to Tracy.”

John Lally Promoted to Chief Claims Officer

In another key leadership update, John Lally has been promoted to chief claims officer, effective June 2. Lally, who has been with the company since 2010, will now sit on Aviva Canada’s executive committee and report directly to the CEO.

Lally’s journey at Aviva began in the finance department. However, in 2017, he transitioned to the claims division, where he held several senior positions. Most recently, he served as senior vice-president of personal insurance claims.

His new responsibilities will include overseeing claims analytics, fraud prevention, quality assurance, and major lines such as property and auto insurance.

This promotion reflects Aviva Canada’s commitment to strengthening claims operations amid increasing weather-related losses.

Rising Loss Ratios Pose New Challenges

These leadership changes come as Aviva Canada grapples with rising loss ratios and more frequent climate-related claims. In 2024, the company reported a combined operating ratio of 98.5%, a significant jump from 95.3% in 2023. The rise was mainly driven by catastrophic weather events.

Despite these challenges, Aviva Canada delivered positive premium growth across both personal and commercial lines. Notably:

  • Personal insurance premiums grew by 13%, supported by strong performance in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Commercial lines saw a 7% increase, fueled by new business and strategic rate adjustments.

Strategic Focus: Climate Risk and Claims Efficiency

Going forward, managing climate-related risks and improving claims response efficiency will be core priorities for the insurer. The evolving leadership structure, with Dhillon and Lally in critical roles, is designed to support these goals.

Aviva Canada aims to remain agile in the face of climate volatility. The insurer is also focused on deploying technology and data-driven strategies to improve claims outcomes and customer satisfaction.

What This Means for Aviva’s Canadian Business

This leadership shift sends a clear message: Aviva Canada is preparing for a new chapter of growth and operational resilience. The organization is not just responding to internal changes, but also aligning its leadership with broader strategic objectives.

With Dhillon’s financial acumen and Lally’s deep expertise in claims, Aviva is well-positioned to address both market demands and customer expectations.

In the meantime, the company continues to search for a permanent CEO, signaling a long-term commitment to leadership excellence and transformation.
