AXIS Capital Holdings has announced a solid financial performance for Q2 2025, marked by increases in both net income and operating income when compared to the same quarter last year. This growth highlights the insurer’s continued resilience and strategic focus on its core insurance operations.

Strong Earnings Reflect Strategic Execution

The company posted a net income of US$216 million, or US$2.72 per diluted share, up from US$204 million, or US$2.40 per diluted share, in Q2 2024. Operating income also rose to US$261 million, or US$3.29 per diluted share, compared to US$250 million, or US$2.93 per diluted share, during the same period last year.

This financial strength came amid a 3% increase in gross premiums written, totaling US$2.5 billion. Notably, the insurance segment grew 7%, which helped offset a 7% drop in the reinsurance business. Similarly, net premiums written rose by 4%, reaching US$1.6 billion. This was driven by an 8% increase in insurance and partly held back by a 9% decrease in reinsurance.

First Half of 2025: Continued Upward Momentum

Looking at the first six months of 2025, AXIS reported gross premiums written of US$5.3 billion, a 4% increase from H1 2024, or 5% when adjusted for constant currency. Insurance once again led the way with a 6% rise, while reinsurance saw modest growth of 1%. Net premiums written for H1 stood at US$3.4 billion, up 3%, or 4% on a constant currency basis.

This consistent growth underlines AXIS’s ability to adapt and deliver results across varying market conditions. Moreover, it shows how the company is successfully navigating global uncertainty while keeping its long-term strategy in focus.

Notable Transactions and Investment Insights

In Q2, AXIS finalized a loss portfolio transfer (LPT) reinsurance deal with Enstar. It covered about US$2 billion in net reserves for past loss liabilities. This transaction was a strategic move to offload older-year risk and sharpen underwriting focus.

Net investment income came in at US$187 million, slightly below the US$191 million posted in Q2 2024. This dip was mainly due to reduced fixed maturity income linked to the LPT. However, it was partially offset by stronger performance in alternative investments.

As of June 30, 2025, the book yield on fixed maturities was 4.6%, up from 4.4% the previous year, while the market yield stood at 5.0%. These figures suggest healthy returns in a still-volatile global investment environment.

The effective tax rate for Q2 was 20.1%. This reflects the income from operations in Bermuda, the UK, the U.S., and Europe. It’s worth noting that Bermuda’s new 15% corporate tax, effective from January 1, 2025, now plays a role in AXIS’s overall tax strategy.

CEO Comments on Strategic Progress

“Our sustained profitable growth is supported by the ongoing enhancement of our operations through our ‘How We Work’ program, which is enabled by investments in technology and AI. While we acknowledge the progress achieved, we remain steadfast in advancing our strategy and providing value to our customers and the broader market,” said Vince Tizzio, President and CEO of AXIS Capital.

This statement underscores the company’s commitment to long-term value creation, fueled by innovation and operational efficiency.

Q1 Highlights AXIS Report

In Q1 2025, AXIS reported a 1.1-point reduction in its general and administrative expense ratio. This was possible because of improved resource allocation and automation. This trend continued into Q2, reinforcing the effectiveness of the company’s cost-control measures.

However, catastrophe losses remained a challenge. In Q1, AXIS absorbed US$49 million in pre-tax catastrophe and weather-related losses. This includes a US$32 million loss from California wildfires. Although these losses were mostly accounted for in previous quarters, they shaped the insurer’s underwriting and reinsurance strategy, especially the recent LPT agreement aimed at risk transfer.

Leadership Changes Strengthen Market Position

In May, AXIS announced key leadership changes within its global markets division. Several executives were promoted to new roles designed to enhance underwriting capabilities and boost client engagement. These changes align with AXIS’s strategic goal to build a more agile, customer-centric organization.

Final Thoughts: A Strategy That’s Paying Off

AXIS Capital’s second-quarter results clearly reflect the company’s strategic focus on profitable growth, risk management, and operational efficiency. While reinsurance continues to face headwinds, the insurance segment is driving the company’s upward trajectory.

With evolving insurance market dynamics and ongoing investments in AI and digital transformation, AXIS Capital is well-positioned to adapt to future challenges and potentially unlock new growth opportunities.
