CFC, a specialist insurance provider renowned for its innovation in cyber and emerging risk coverage, has announced the appointment of Nick Line as its next Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO). Line is set to take on the role in 2026, following the completion of his nearly three-decade career at Markel.

A Strategic Move to Strengthen Underwriting Leadership

The appointment is part of a broader leadership transformation at CFC, designed to enhance its global capabilities and drive international growth. The company stated that its recent executive hires aim to reinforce its long-term strategy and scale its operations across core business lines.

Nick Line brings a wealth of experience. Having joined the insurance industry in 1997, he has held both actuarial and underwriting roles. Since 2018, he has served as CUO at Markel, where he played a pivotal role in product development, geographic expansion, and acquisition integration.

“Line’s experience in technical underwriting and international operations will support the business’s strategic direction,” said Louise O’Shea, Group CEO of CFC. She also emphasized the cultural fit, noting that “CFC and Markel share a similar approach to service delivery and team culture,” which will ease Line’s transition into his new position.

Driving Innovation and Operational Excellence

At Markel, Line spearheaded initiatives to diversify the company’s underwriting portfolio. He also focused on improving underwriting discipline and enhancing operational infrastructure, making a lasting impact on the firm’s growth.

His industry leadership extends beyond the corporate space. Currently, Line serves as:

  • Chair of the Inclusion @ Lloyd’s committee, promoting diversity within the Lloyd’s market
  • Member of the Lloyd’s Market Association’s CUO Committee, where market-wide issues and innovations are discussed

These roles demonstrate his commitment to shaping a more inclusive and forward-thinking insurance industry.

Longstanding Collaboration Between CFC and Markel

Since 2019, CFC and Markel have maintained a strong working relationship, with Markel acting as a capacity provider for various areas of CFC’s managing general agent (MGA) portfolio. These include lines such as:

  • Transaction liability
  • Terrorism insurance

Through this partnership, both firms have collaborated on product innovation and capacity deployment in niche insurance segments.

Line’s Motivation and Vision for the Future

After 28 years at Markel, Nick Line is ready for a new chapter. In his statement, he explained his motivation for making the move.

“The decision to leave Markel followed nearly three decades at the company and reflected my interest in taking on new challenges,” Line said. “CFC’s focus on innovation and flexible operating model had long appealed to me, and the opportunity offered a platform to apply my experience in a new context.”

His appointment signals CFC’s continued ambition to lead in specialized insurance markets while maintaining underwriting excellence.

What This Means for CFC’s Future

By bringing in a leader with deep technical expertise and global experience, CFC is positioning itself to scale effectively in an evolving insurance industry. The company’s reputation for tackling emerging risks, particularly in cyber, tech, and transaction liability, makes this a timely move.
