How Aetna Health Insurance is Responding to Coronavirus (COVID-19)

How Aetna health insurance provider is handling Coronavirus

Aetna is a health care insurance provider with headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut in the United States. They major focus is in selling traditional and consumer directed health care insurance and related services through employer-paid insurance and benefit programs, and through Medicare.

In a bid to make life easier for employees across the United States, Aetna has responded to the Coronavirus like every insurance provider by doing the following.

Effective immediately, Aetna members will have access to the following resources:

1. Aetna will waive member cost sharing for diagnostic testing related to COVID-19

This policy from Aetna covers the cost of the office, emergency room or clinic visit that results in the administration of or order for a COVID-19 test.

The Coronavirus test can be done by any approved laboratory. This member cost-sharing waiver from Aetna applies to all Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid lines of business.

The insurance policy also aligns with new Families First legislation and regulation requiring all health plans to provide coverage of COVID-19 testing without cost share.

The requirement also applies to self-insured plans. Per guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Labor and the Department of the Treasury, all Commercial, Medicaid and Medicare plans must cover certain serological (antibody) testing with no cost-sharing.

2. Until June 4, 2020, Aetna will waive member cost sharing for any covered telemedicine visits — regardless of diagnosis

Aetna members are hereby advised to use telemedicine as their first line of defense in order to limit potential exposure in physician offices.

For all Aetna plans offering Teladoc® coverage, cost sharing will be waived for all Teladoc® virtual visits. Cost sharing will also be waived for real-time virtual visits offered by in-network providers (live video-conferencing and telephone-only telemedicine services) for all Commercial plan designs. Members may use telemedicine services for any reason, not just COVID-19 diagnosis. Please, understand that self-insured plan sponsors will be able to opt-out of this program at their discretion.

3. Through Aetna’s Healing Better program, members who are diagnosed with COVID-19 will receive a care package 

This healing better program will contain CVS over-the-counter medications to help relieve symptoms. The care package will also include personal and household cleaning supplies to help keep others in the home protected from potential exposure.

4. Aetna will be reaching out to members most at-risk of coronavirus.

Through existing care management programs, Aetna will proactively reach out to members most at-risk for COVID-19. Care managers will walk members through what they can do to protect themselves, where to get information on the virus, and where to go to get tested.

5. Aetna is extending its Medicare Advantage virtual evaluation and monitoring visit benefit

All Aetna Commercial members will be receiving Medical Advantage virtual evaluation as a fully-covered benefit. This offering will empower members with other conditions that need follow-up care to engage with healthcare providers without the concern of sitting in a physician’s office and risking potential exposure to Coronavirus.
