Ryan Specialty has consolidated its Canadian managing general underwriting (MGU) operations into a new holding and operating company, Ryan Specialty Canada, marking a significant step in strengthening its specialty insurance platform in the country.

As part of the restructuring, Stephen Stewart has been appointed chief executive officer of Ryan Specialty Canada. Stewart will continue in his role as president and CEO of Stewart Specialty Risk Underwriting, while assuming responsibility for leading the expanded national platform. His mandate includes driving sustainable growth while preserving the underwriting discipline and specialist expertise that define Ryan Specialty’s Canadian businesses.

Consolidation of Canadian MGU operations

With the creation of Ryan Specialty Canada, the group has completed the amalgamation of several Canadian MGUs under a single structure. These include Alive Risk, Stewart Specialty Risk Underwriting, Global Special Risks, Technical Risk Underwriters, PERse (Power. Energy. Risk.), Trident Marine Managers, and Ryan Transactional Risk.

Ryan Specialty said the legal integration is already underway, with underwriting, operations, and support teams actively collaborating to build a unified Canadian platform. The aim is to improve coordination across specialty lines while maintaining each unit’s niche focus and delegated underwriting authority.

Why the move matters for Canada’s specialty insurance market

The consolidation reflects the growing role of MGUs and coverholder-style platforms in Canada’s specialty and complex-risk market. As an increasing number of risks fall outside standard insurer appetites, brokers are relying more heavily on specialist underwriters with access to both domestic and international capacity.

By bringing multiple MGUs under one national structure, Ryan Specialty can better align underwriting appetite, reduce duplication, and offer brokers a clearer and more efficient route to specialized products and expertise.

Miles Wuller, CEO of Ryan Specialty Underwriting Managers (RSUM), said the move is designed to provide stronger market insight and encourage collaboration across the platform.

“Bringing together all of our managing general underwriters under one Canadian entity and proven country specialty insurance leader provides RSUM a single, focused view of the wider Canadian market. This consolidation enables each of our MGUs to more seamlessly tap into the broader RSUM platform to better serve our Canadian clients and trading partners.”

Impact on brokers and regulatory alignment

For Canadian brokers, a unified MGU platform can simplify the placement of complex, multi-line risks, such as those combining technical property, construction, marine, or transactional risk coverage. Centralized coordination can speed up decision-making and streamline internal referrals across specialties.

From a governance perspective, country-level integration also supports regulatory expectations around delegated authority, oversight, and product governance, while allowing underwriting teams to retain their specialist identities and local market focus.

Stephen Stewart said the new structure provides a foundation for long-term growth in Canada.

“Completing the amalgamation and establishing Ryan Specialty Canada is an important milestone for our business. It formalizes the structure needed to support long-term growth in Canada and positions our teams to better serve brokers and trading partners nationwide.”

With Ryan Specialty Canada now in place, the group is positioning itself to play a larger role in Canada’s evolving specialty insurance landscape.
