Sagen MI Canada Inc. has reported a net income of $111 million for the second quarter of 2025. This marks a 26% decrease from the $151 million earned in the same quarter last year. The decline was mainly driven by a weaker net insurance service result and subdued investment income.
Although Sagen MI did not release specific figures on claims activity or premium trends, the drop in earnings suggests tighter margins. These pressures are occurring in a housing market still navigating high interest rates, economic volatility, and significant regional differences in real estate performance.
Investment Income Feels the Heat of Market Volatility
Like many financial institutions, Sagen MI is feeling the impact of ongoing market instability. Investment income took a hit during the quarter, further weighing on the company’s profitability. With continued uncertainty in the broader economy, insurance companies across Canada are reassessing their strategies to remain competitive.
A Key Player in Canada’s Housing Finance Market
Sagen MI is one of Canada’s leading mortgage insurers, offering protection to lenders against the risk of borrower default. Its quarterly performance is often viewed as an indicator of the health of Canada’s housing and mortgage markets.
Because mortgage affordability remains a widespread concern, industry watchers are closely monitoring any signs of rising risk. If home prices decline further or delinquency rates increase, it could negatively affect underwriting outcomes in the second half of 2025.

Dividend Declared Despite Earnings Dip
Despite the lower earnings, Sagen MI’s board of directors declared a dividend of $0.3375 per Class A preferred share, Series 1. The dividend is payable on September 29, 2025, to shareholders of record as of September 15, 2025. Notably, the company clarified that all declared dividends are classified as eligible dividends for Canadian tax purposes.
Shareholders Approve All Resolutions at AGM
In June 2025, shareholders of Sagen MI Canada gathered for the company’s annual general meeting. All proposed resolutions received approval. Additionally, all 11 board nominees were elected, though levels of support varied between candidates.
The reappointment of Ernst & Young LLP as the company’s auditors passed with overwhelming support, over 99.99% in favor, and only 45 votes withheld.

What Lies Ahead for Sagen?
While Sagen MI has managed to remain profitable, the sharp decline in quarterly income reflects the mounting challenges in the housing and financial markets in Canada. Moving forward, the company will likely focus on maintaining risk discipline and preserving capital strength, especially as economic headwinds persist.
Investors and analysts alike will be watching future quarters closely, particularly for any shifts in credit quality, housing market trends, and investment performance.
