Several major players in the insurance industry have recently announced key leadership appointments aimed at strengthening their capabilities in underwriting, employee benefits, and strategic advisory services. From executive hires to board expansions, these moves reflect a broader industry focus on talent acquisition and innovation.

Alliant Insurance Expands Senior Leadership in the Pacific Northwest and Beyond

Alliant Insurance Services has made two high-profile additions to its senior ranks. Andy Oldenburg and Betty Wehmann have been appointed as senior vice presidents, supporting the firm’s Alliant Americas and Employee Benefits Group divisions, respectively.

Oldenburg, who is based in Portland, Oregon, brings over 20 years of experience in risk management and alternative risk strategies. His expertise spans multiple insurance lines, including general liability, workers’ compensation, property, auto, and employment practices liability. Before joining Alliant, he served as a commercial lines agent at a global brokerage and consulting firm.

Educationally, Oldenburg holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Montana and attended Lewis & Clark Law School. He also carries the CRM (Certified Risk Manager) and CRIS (Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist) designations.

Meanwhile, Wehmann joins Alliant from a national brokerage and consulting firm, where she also served as a senior vice president. Her new role will focus on scalable employee benefits strategies for a growing national client base. Her areas of expertise include cost containment, employee engagement, and diverse funding mechanisms.

Wehmann graduated from Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania.

This appointment follows another strategic hire in Alliant’s Employee Benefits Group: Keith Coghlan, who recently joined as vice president, will support clients across the Southeastern United States.

Aspen Insurance Names John Welch as Group CUO

Aspen Insurance Holdings Limited has announced the promotion of John Welch to group chief underwriting officer (CUO), effective August 1. Welch joined the company in June 2023 as CUO for its reinsurance division, bringing with him more than 30 years of executive-level experience.

Prior to Aspen, Welch held key roles at AXA XL and XL Catlin Group, where he played a central role in shaping underwriting strategies.

In his new position, Welch will report directly to Christian Dunleavy, group president and CEO of Aspen Bermuda Limited. He will oversee underwriting across all business segments, driving Aspen’s overall risk strategy.

Additionally, Aspen has been actively investing in internal leadership. Just months ago, the company promoted Jon Kattman to head of inland marine, signaling a continued focus on segment-specific growth.

Mosaic Insurance Adds Industry Veterans to Its Advisory Board

Mosaic Insurance has strengthened its advisory board with the addition of three new members: Peter Breitstone, George Hanna, and Tom Kim. Each brings specialized experience in areas such as cybersecurity, private equity, and insurance innovation.

The board, originally chaired by veteran insurance executive Joe Boren, aims to provide guidance across Mosaic’s growing global operations.

Peter Breitstone

Breitstone currently leads a consultancy and brokerage that advises insurers, insurtechs, private equity firms, and healthcare organizations. He is known for launching one of the industry’s earliest boutique environmental brokerages. His prior affiliations include Goji, Zurich North America, and Aon. Breitstone holds a law degree from Temple University and is licensed to practice in both New York and Washington, D.C.

George Hanna

Hanna has served in legal and regulatory executive roles across the insurance and tech sectors. Notably, he provided legal counsel during the sale of Secureworks to Sophos. His previous leadership roles span organizations such as YP Holdings, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and BellSouth Corporation. Hanna earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Miami in Florida.

Tom Kim

Kim recently retired from his post as managing director and global risk manager at KKR, where he spent two decades building insurance solutions for over 1,000 private equity deals. He has also held roles at Cerberus Capital Management and Aon. Kim holds degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Loyola Marymount University, and Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

This board expansion follows the promotion of Yosha DeLong to global engagement officer at Mosaic, a move announced last month as part of the firm’s push toward broader stakeholder alignment.
