Zurich Insurance Group has officially acquired BOXX Insurance Inc., a leading Canadian insurtech firm specializing in cyber insurance and risk management solutions. This move significantly strengthens Zurich’s global presence in the retail and SME cyber insurance market.
Based in Toronto, BOXX Insurance offers integrated cyber protection through its flagship Cyberboxx suite, combining cyber insurance and cybersecurity services into one seamless solution. The acquisition will allow Zurich to offer these services on a global scale, enhancing its ability to deliver prevention, protection, and recovery products to both consumers and businesses.
Although BOXX will now operate under the umbrella of Zurich Global Ventures (ZGV), the company will continue trading under its own brand. ZGV currently manages Zurich’s platforms business across life protection, employee benefits, and travel insurance.
Building on an Existing Partnership
Zurich CEO Cara Morton highlighted that the acquisition builds on a strong foundation:
“We have had a very successful collaboration with BOXX since 2021. BOXX’s digital-first, service-led approach will help us further enhance customer engagement and provide integrated solutions that make people’s everyday life easier.”
BOXX CEO and co-founder Vishal Kundi also expressed enthusiasm for the deal:
“Joining Zurich gives us the resources and reach to accelerate our mission,” he said. “This partnership helps expand our cyber offerings and continue delivering value-driven solutions for both individuals and businesses.”

Rapid Growth and Global Recognition
Founded in 2018, BOXX Insurance has quickly expanded its reach across five continents, serving nearly one million customers. In November 2024, the company was named ‘Insurtech of the Year’ by Insurance Business Canada—an accolade that reflects its commitment to innovation and customer-centricity.
As part of its growth trajectory, BOXX has recently expanded operations to the United States and has established a presence in India, Europe, and Australia. The acquisition by Zurich adds further momentum to this expansion, leveraging Zurich’s global scale and robust infrastructure.
Zurich’s Broader Acquisition Strategy
This is not Zurich’s first bold move in 2024. Earlier this year, the company acquired a minority stake in Icen Risk, a UK-based firm that underwrites insurance for mergers and acquisitions. Zurich also secured American International Group’s global travel insurance unit and took a majority stake in India’s Kotak General Insurance Company Ltd.
These acquisitions underscore Zurich’s aggressive push to diversify its global portfolio, especially within emerging digital and specialty insurance markets.
Strengthening Zurich’s Cyber Capabilities
With BOXX’s cyber expertise, Zurich aims to deliver holistic cyber solutions that go beyond traditional insurance coverage. From real-time threat detection to incident response and data recovery, BOXX’s services are designed to meet the needs of today’s digital-first consumers and small businesses.
Zurich believes this acquisition aligns with its mission to offer “value-adding, digital-first solutions” that help customers manage risk in an increasingly connected world.
