Lancashire Insurance Holdings has expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome of its January 1, 2026, reinsurance renewals, highlighting improved reinsurance structures and efficient risk protection that will help stabilize earnings in the coming years.
Company executives said the new arrangements will allow Lancashire to better manage risk exposure while maintaining strong profitability despite a more competitive insurance market.
Lancashire Sees Strong Reinsurance Renewal Outcome
During a discussion with analysts following the release of its 2025 financial results, Lancashire’s leadership shared positive insights about the latest renewal season.
Alex Maloney, Chief Executive Officer of Lancashire, explained that the insurance market remains cyclical. However, the company still secured one of its strongest portfolios to date.
According to Maloney, the company achieved solid pricing adequacy despite increased competition across the global reinsurance market. He also pointed out that the company’s Group Risk Pricing Index (RPI) ended 2025 at 96%, which remains higher than levels seen before 2023.
This reflects a market environment where capital supply has increased after several profitable years for insurers and reinsurers.

Growing Capital in the Reinsurance Market
Maloney noted that many insurers have reinvested profits into the market, increasing the overall capital available for underwriting.
However, demand for coverage has not grown at the same pace as the rising supply of capital.
Despite this shift, Lancashire believes profit margins remain attractive, especially after factoring in reinsurance costs. This positive outlook gives the company confidence in its ability to generate strong underwriting results in 2026 and beyond.
Improved Reinsurance Structure Reduces Volatility
Paul Gregory, Chief Underwriting Officer at Lancashire, provided more detailed insights into the company’s strategy.
He explained that Lancashire took advantage of softer market conditions to purchase more efficient reinsurance protection.
The company adjusted its reinsurance structure to better control risk exposure and reduce earnings volatility.
Gregory said the improved reinsurance arrangements allow Lancashire to:
- Reduce exposure to catastrophic events
- Manage balance sheet risks more effectively
- Maintain stable earnings during volatile market cycles
One example is the company’s aggregate catastrophe protection, which was renewed with a lower attachment point and higher coverage limit.
This means the protection begins earlier and offers stronger coverage if catastrophe losses increase.
Reinsurance Costs Remain Stable
Despite changes to the reinsurance structure, Lancashire expects its overall reinsurance spending to remain roughly the same as in 2025.
Gregory explained that the softer reinsurance market allowed the company to reduce premium costs while simultaneously strengthening its risk protection.
Rather than simply cutting costs, Lancashire used part of the savings to create a more comprehensive reinsurance programme that supports long-term earnings stability.
This strategy allows the company to maintain sustainable profitability even during difficult catastrophe years.
Lancashire Takes More Catastrophe Risk After Syndicate Move
In 2025, Lancashire also increased its exposure to catastrophe risk after buying out the remaining external participants in Syndicate 2010.
Although this increased the company’s catastrophe exposure, Gregory emphasized that Lancashire has simultaneously reduced its inward retrocession portfolio and improved its overall reinsurance protection.
As a result, the company believes its risk profile remains balanced and well managed.
Outlook for Lancashire Insurance in 2026
Lancashire’s leadership remains optimistic about the future.
While the global reinsurance market is becoming more competitive, the company believes that disciplined underwriting and carefully structured reinsurance protection will continue to deliver strong results.
The company also plans to continue refining its reinsurance strategy to protect earnings and maintain profitability through the insurance market cycle.
